Pros

Bench used to be such an awesome place to work. There are some really amazing, unique people who are great to work with.

Cons

Unfortunately upper management at Bench doesn't care about its employees anymore, the people who helped build and maintain this company. Firstly, salaries at Bench are incredibly low. The amount they pay us is laughable. Some might argue that the "great" culture and benefits make up for the lack of pay, but it does not - this is just management's excuse to pay their employees less. In Vancouver, this amount is barely livable. For the amount of work they force upon you it's not worth it. Secondly, Bench's upper management only cares about themselves and is controlled by a few two-faced, manipulative individuals. Management doesn't understand how to talk to their employees and give constructive feedback. Recently there have been numerous lay-offs of people who have put their blood, sweat, and tears into Bench. Their crime? Caring too much about the company. If you're vocal and provide feedback it will only result in your demise at Bench. Often Bench praises itself for the company's great autonomy, but this is simply not the case anymore. Management doesn't listen to their employees. Lastly, as a result of losing most of Bench's top-performing employees, there is no longer incentive to work. Management expects to grow the company but morale is at an all-time low (as of September 14th, 2016). There is no need to work hard because all of Bench's best and brightest workers were laid-off for reasons that were not expressed to staff. I used to really love working at Bench. I praised the company to my family and friends. I feel cheated by this company. Management is truly disgusting. Everything that I once loved about Bench is gone. Verdict: I encourage everyone, current and prospective employees, to turn away from Bench. The terrible salaries, poor leadership, and major morale issues will inevitably run this company into the ground. Bench may seem like an amazing place to work on the surface. Keep searching. You are better than Bench. Take it from a current employee of Bench Accounting, you'll regret working here. Please take this review seriously. It will most likely be buried in fake, positive reviews formulated by management.

Bench Accounting Response

Hi - Jordan here from Bench. For those reading, I’m one of the co-founders. We went through a painful layoff of 10% of our 250 person workforce on September 14th, so I wanted to address this review personally. I understand that this reviewer is very frustrated. Given the difficulty of the events we just went through, it is understandable. While I won’t address some of the more aggressive comments, I will say this to anyone reading: Bench is 220 people and growing, and at all levels of this organization, from Benchmates to management, the company has passionate people who care about the future of Bench and the experience of everyone involved. Situations like the one this individual is reacting to are painful for everyone, for me personally it was one of the toughest in my career. We would never take an action like this unless the consequences of not acting were worse. To the Benchmates here, and the hundreds more who join, this decision was made to support a future where the experience this person loved so much is truly sustainable. To the person who wrote this, if you feel this way, I encourage you to follow your advice and make a change, I would never want someone to punch in and punch out, collecting a paycheck from an organization they felt this negative about. With that said, if after some time passes, you feel differently and decide to stay, I welcome you to see my words through the action our company takes following this transition. I would also welcome you to grab a coffee with me or any other manager or leader you feel comfortable with, to have a conversation about the direction of Bench. Best, Jordan
