Pros
I do not know if this is counted as a benefit, but you get 10% discount for shopping at BevMo, when Total Wine has better prices even without the so called “employee discount”? The selections of any wine, beer, or spirit are extremely limited and the staff do not know what they are doing/selling, as they rely on a booklet when questions are being asked on a specific item. The sales associate would literally pull out the booklet and try to sell you the product based on what they can read off from it and the label on the bottle.
Cons
The company is unorganized and controlled by a former leader from the military, supported by a group of senior management who are operating in old school fashion. The decision is from top down, where employees are expected to follow orders and strict rules set forth by the one and only key officer. The mentality is that if the employee disobeys the orders or goes off route/back route like Waze, then he or she can get packing. There is no culture in place and most of the employees are disengaged, except for upper management, directors, and managers who are highly compensated and the group of employees who look upon them, hoping for raises. Employees are expected to backstab their colleagues if they want to get promoted. Everyone in the company are constantly being monitored by management/peers and not treated with any respect as they are just names on a piece of paper, where everyone is replaceable and dispensable, like used tissue. All employees are being used to achieve BevMo’s goal, to become the largest alcohol reseller in the US when they are losing competitive edge with more players coming to the segment. With Costco, Target, Safeway and mainly Total Wine opening in every corner where there is BevMo’s existence, the company is struggling to compete, the only way for them to survive is by cutting hours, wages, benefits, and people in every possible way. The company has little focus on what the employees want, but put in plans hoping to get results… Most stores are always short-handed (you can hardly find a person to help; as opposed to staffs located everywhere in Total Wine). As other reviews have mentioned, they love to wear their employees out with minimal annual raises. The best thing any employee can get from their managers or peers is to receive a thank you note on the intranet, where every colleague can see what is posted when they take the time to log in to the portal to look at them after work! Employees are also expected to brown nose upper management if they want to secure their jobs, including but not limited to, attend all townhall meetings/field leaders call/quarterly meetings (where the field leaders have no incentive if the company is doing well, except for minimal raises or possible but not guaranteed bonus), wear multiple hats for the salary of one, work excessive overtime, and be thankful to upper management when given trainings or for provided with opportunity to attend special events (there is one every year where all field leaders/managers can come to the HQ to meet with the back office staff and cannot drink any alcohol, with a sip and spit policy; in addition, field leaders and managers can get freebies that are provided as marketing material by the vendors).
