Better than other retail, but still retail - Cashier Big 5 Sporting Goods Employee Review

Pros

Customers tend to be more understanding and friendly than at department stores. Co-workers are engaging. Company provides lockers for you to lock your stuff up during a shift.

Cons

No room for upward movement if you are a woman or a cashier (all women are made cashiers, all men are put in sales. A promotion to Jr Mgr is only possible from a sales position). That includes moving to full time.... being 'Head Cashier' is a unionized option that doesn't exist anymore.

Pros

Most employees were really fun to work with, life/work balance was great, taught me good life skills, good first job for work experience.

Cons

Barely got scheduled (pretty sure my location was way over employed), occasional rude and entitled costumers (especially during the holidays), could get very slow and boring at times, sketchy area, overal, not a great job if you're looking for something that pays well.
