Pros

Pay & benefits were nice Remote flexibility was great Challenging work environment made for great learnings. Decent budgets made some projects really fun to produce. The company really tries to be open & inclusive (although the top rankings remain largely YT but they try to be “cool” & YT). Working at other offices in different cities is great. Emphasis on continued learning / up-skilling Generally people tried to make work fun and many colleagues are legitimately good hangs Plenty diversity in the lower levels of the company Business Resource Groups are full of great people doing important & unpaid work alongside their paid jobs (Indigenous Peoples, Veterans, Women, Neurodiverse, AfroBlock, etc.) Company is a collection of brands beloved by many

Cons

Jack literally disappeared from leadership for like a year during the pandemic then it seemed like he came back, hated how the senior leaders were running the company, and caused quite a stir / made aggressive changes that would’ve been less aggressive had he stuck around all along / not disappeared Many Square & Cash App customers absolutely hate their experiences with the product… A lot of Cash App customers get scammed out of money and experience 0 recourse (it’s happened to me and friends). Teams were constantly combatting burnout because the culture of working at Block is to work all day & night. Constant internal reorganizations and acquisitions made for an unnecessarily complex work environment. Working at Block is like playing a constant game of “Who’s on first?” & like the Spider-Man meme where they’re all pointing at each other. Executives were either great leaders or absolutely horrible. I worked with a few horrible ones. Insane amount of middle management layers. Gossip was a mainstay especially within Executive Operations. Very easy to fall out of someone’s good graces. Proximity bias is alive & well especially in Exec Ops (i.e. if you go into the offices and pretended to be happy to grab lunches then that catapulted you in the eyes of the leads). People would outright say how they gamed this system for advancement. Very easy to get trapped in your level and/or your role (company-wide issue) Extreme & unchecked pandemic hiring sent the company into equally extreme layoffs There is an illusion of transparency
