Pros

-Some of colleagues are lovely, intelligent, talented folks. -The ability to travel is nice but you often don’t get enough notice that you will be traveling -Good office space, plenty of places to hide and get your work done if you need to get away from all the drama.

Cons

I really wish I had checked Glassdoor to see some of the negative reviews before I accepted the position. If I had I wouldn’t have taken it. Very early on I could see that this place was in trouble and very mismanaged. I managed to have an okay time during my stay but hated what I could see happening around me. -Constant promises of change but no follow through -Poor and inconsistent communication -Temper runs hot by the co-owners to the point where they downright bully/gaslight/manipulate employees -Nepotism -Just about zero work/life balance. Because the company uses Slack you are expected to be in constant contact even on nights and weekend. -No overtime pay for inconsistent hours. -Disorganized. Policies and procedures are all over the place. -Favoritisms of certain employees. These employees receive preferential treatment. -Culture of “Work Family” taken way to seriously to the point where “Work Family” comes first. -People work in free and the anxiety is not only palpable but contagious -Has a bad reputation in the industry, so not a great place to build a resume.

Bowstring Studios Response

I'm very sorry to read how this former employee viewed his or her time at Bowstring. Obviously, no company is right for everyone, but there are numerous items in here that just don't seem to reflect reality and some that are grounded in misunderstanding of policies. Some examples: - Comp time is given for weekend travel or productions, not for overtime worked during the week. This is clearly outlined in the comp time policy. - Exempt employees, which is basically every Bowstring team member, are not eligible for overtime. This is not a Bowstring policy, it's the law. - All team members are very clearly told that they are not expected to be on Slack or email after-hours, unless a specific project requires it. Some folks obviously are active on Slack more than others, but it is not and never has been a requirement. We take allegations of things like bullying very seriously, but it's hard to reconcile this person's experience with those of the rest of our 35 employees who overwhelmingly report high job satisfaction. I would encourage this person to reach out to me directly to discuss any specific concerns, and similarly, I am happy to discuss the allegations contained herein with any prospective employee. - Sean Quinn, President sean@bowstring.tv
