Pros
The things that I liked about CAL ranch were: 1. Flexible hours that fit with my school schedule. 2. Some of the co-workers were decently nice.
Cons
Where do I begin? 1. No loyalty to the employees. They don't care about you because there are 500 more college students waiting for a job interview. Even after 3 years of working there, you're totally replaceable. 2. Poor hiring skills. They would rather hire an 18-year-old for a management position than a married 22-year-old with a business degree. On top of that, many of the employees hired at he store I worked for were completely useless and only got hired because they had a sob story. 3. Non-existent equality. I came out as gay and for the next 6 weeks received only 4 hours of work per week. You try supporting yourself on $25 per week. They tried to say it was because of the labor budget, but nobody else had below 12 hours per week. The new manager is much more accepting, so at least that part has been better. 4. Extremely low pay. I started out at 7.50 and at the end of 3 years was finally making 9.00. finally. I worked in the animal health department where we were basically expected to be vet techs. Employees should be making more for the amount of knowledge they are expected to have. 5. Cutthroat culture. I watched some of the best employees get steamrolled because a few of the lifers decided they didn't like that person. They made life miserable for these employees. One of the steamrolled employees is a sweet old lady who has been something of a grandma to me since I started. She doesn't deserve that. There are so many other negatives that I didn't cover here.
