Pros

-Free Tickets -Coworker Relationships -Stable Hours (in the sense they will have you working you as much is legally possible)

Cons

-Poor Management/Management Favouritism -Unsafe working conditions (not closing the park in freezing cold weather, letting employees get soaked in rain, young employees regularly passing our from heat stroke, uneven walking surfaces causing sprains/fractures etc) -Low pay for the amount of expected work. -LONG hours - at LEAST 3 additional hours (unpaid) of transportation time and waiting for buses before/after shifts as the bus schedule did not align with shift times. -HORRIBLE treatment from customers with no support from management. -On your feet all day long- not allowed to sit down even for a second. -Working in outside in uncomfortable, hot (employer-regulated/mandated) uniforms that you have to purchase yourself. -Breaks include walking time from work station to break room. Therefore, if you have a 30m break, and your station is a 6 minute walk from the break room, you end up having just 18 minutes worth of break time for an 8.5h shift. -Management has a storied history of racial discrimination.

Pros

Despite the challenges, the role was very rewarding. Operating rides meant interacting with hundreds of guests each day, answering questions, and ensuring everyone was following safety rules. This helped me build confidence when communicating with people and strengthened my patience when dealing with large crowds or stressful situations. The job also improved my time management skills. Ride operators needed to keep the ride cycles running smoothly while following strict safety procedures, which required attention to detail and efficiency. Learning to balance safety, speed, and guest service was an important part of the role. Overall, working as a Ride Operator at Calaway Park was a great learning experience. The structured environment and responsibility of the job helped me develop confidence, patience, and strong time management skills that are valuable in any future workplace.

Cons

Working as a Ride Operator at Calaway Park was a valuable experience that helped me develop important personal and professional skills. The job was very well organized, with clear expectations and procedures that made it easy to understand what was required each day. Management placed a strong emphasis on professionalism, especially when it came to dress code and phone policies. Phones were not allowed during shifts and uniforms had to be worn properly at all times, which created a disciplined work environment and helped ensure that operators stayed focused on safety and guests. One challenge of the job was the working conditions. Many ride stations did not have much shelter, so during the summer months it could get very hot while standing outside for long periods of time. This could be physically tiring, especially during busy days. However, it also taught me how to stay focused and manage my energy while working in outdoor conditions.
