Pros
- Development: It's an excellent place to begin your career. They do a fantastic job of developing entry-level employees. During my time there, I learned essential communication skills, office etiquette, and effective writing techniques.
- Benefits: The benefits are great! They have a 401k match. They also give 3 weeks of vacation and a holiday break from Christmas Eve until New Year's.
- Employees: Most employees are friendly and nice to talk to.
Cons
- Bureaucratic: I've found The First Church of Christ, Scientist to be bureaucratic. You must go through the right approval channels to do anything, especially for bigger projects. Bigger projects need Board approval to move forward. I understand the need for approvals dealing with non-profit budgets, but I've noticed the lengthy approval process can cause people to be frustrated. Some employees take out their frustrations by being passive-aggressive. The passive aggressiveness can create an uncomfortable environment.
- Streamlining: Their processes are not streamlined. Their processes require several steps. Each step presents opportunities for failure. Since their process requires several steps, it also makes it difficult to train new team members.
- Management: In some cases, I've found that people who work at the director level tend to be knowledgeable within their specific domain, but employees who work in middle management aren't as knowledgeable.
