Pros

The individuals you work with on a daily basis become family due to the fact that you see them more than your own husband/wife/children. If you are lucky you will work with a great bunch co-workers who share in the passion of making others life's better. Watching someone achieve a goal is what made me go to work every day!!

Cons

If you are ready to work you tail off and get very little RESPECT then this is the job for you. Be ready to work short handed on a daily basis. Many times they will pull staff from one house to another with little to no notice. Half the time the House Managers are unaware that their staff has been pulled. Due to this it leaves other houses out of ratio 2 staff for 8 individuals. Many times individuals are unable to go out into the community due to under staffing. Many houses have violent or sexually inappropriate individuals and the staff that works with them tend to be female..... accident waiting to happen. It can be a very dangerous place to work if one is not careful. Food is not always delivered in a timely manner and they tend to feed everyone low fat, sugar free food which is full of added chemicals which have been proven to cause behavioral issues. The houses are often intermixed with both higher and lower functioning individuals which can cause issues within the household. They work their House Managers to the brink of exhaustion. House Managers are on call 24hrs a day 365 days a year. I cant tell you how many managers I have seen come and go. As for the Direct Support Professionals the turn over rate is even higher. Many times the houses are not stocked with proper cleaning supplies. When you have 6 to 8 individuals in a house having an ample supply of cleaning material is a must. Often staff or managers will buy supplies out of their own pockets and rarely get reimbursed. The upper management is rarely ever seen unless you go to the main office. Many times when there they walk past you like you don't exist. When they do speak with you it is often in a rude manner as if they are talking at you not to you. They often threaten ones job if you do not comply with their demands.
