Pros

The people of Crown are incredible! They are friendly and always ready to listen and attempt to help you IF they can. Every department wants to talk to you and get to know you. There are great perks. Free Meals on special occasions. Management is open-door so you can walk in and chat with your boss if he's not too busy. Department head was a great guy (but a lousy manager IMO). Also, the CEO is great (when I had a chance to speak with him).

Cons

Crown had a bad rap a few years ago but before I was hired, I was told they were trying to change that culture. Unfortunately, while I was there, it didn't look like any changes were being made. At least in the department I was in. After three days of on-boarding (with a two day HR training session), I thought "Wow! They are serious!" Then I met my co-workers in our jammed office space. People who spent more time trying to one-up one another and joke around. One Project Manager came off as incredibly insensitive (borderline racist) but in a joking manner so "it was okay." As projects fell down or got delayed or had to be followed up on Crown's dime, they spent most of their time blaming the clients for "not knowing what they were buying" or "didn't know how the real world worked." The head of the department promised intense training so by the time I was given a project, I would know exactly what to do. That never happened. There was no training once the HR portion was done. Just a lot of joshing and 2 - 3 hour "learning sessions" where the department head had to be the "big dog" and the smartest person in the room. No matter how many times I sat in his office to get information or ask questions, I was always brushed off because he basically ran the department on he's own (despite having 4-5 guys under him). Example: While trying to have a sit down with him before a meeting, he was simultaneously - On his cell phone speaking to a client; on his office phone calling down to the floor; texting someone; emailing about another project; and speaking to me in 2 seconds peeps before saying "Gimme a second." Great multi-tasking but it all falls apart when nothing gets done because it's all spread thin like old butter. This is what I believe was wrong with the whole situation at Crown at that time. This person was basically the lynchpin of the company but only gave so much control to the rest of his staff. If this guy ever got hit by a car, that department would surely collapse. There were days when he was unavailable and the company pretty much stopped in its tracks. During one of the "learning sessions," I was referred to a basic chart that broke down the workflow at Crown and was told "This is everything you need to know." Yes, it was an ordinary, easy to follow work flow chart that gave you the very basics. Great! I got that. What it didn't do was explain the methodology used to get detailed information once you got past that basic work flow. The stuff clients want to know. When is this going to be delivered? How is material shortage effecting production? Why did this ship damaged? None of that was covered in this magical chart. How to get the information was incredible guarded even when asked directly. And even then, it was met with ridicule. I was never allowed to know what I didn't know. Now, this was only in my department where this occurred. I am not sure how the rest of the company works or if they have issues. I would have loved to have grown with the company as promised. Unfortunately, it became clear that this was not the place for me.
