Pros

The ideas behind Dakota Software's applications are very interesting. The content that they've spent 25 years creating is their selling point. You'll be very busy - never bored! Small company, so you'll have many jobs. Some people (lower in the ranks) are trying their best to rewrite the software so it functions like people expect 21st century software to function. I learned a lot about different kinds of technology when working there.

Cons

The support and services (implementation) teams have been struggling for years. Sales and R&D think it's a problem with the services department. It's not. The struggles stem from sales making promises to customers that can't be kept. They also stem from the fact that the software is old and dated and buggy. Upgrades only introduce new bugs. Customers have almost no way to customize the software themselves, so they are left waiting and angry. The tools that the services team has are garbage. For all these reasons, turnover in this department is absurdly high. Customers have noticed and are starting to drop off themselves. The president of this company holds power too close and doesn't listen to other people. He has also kept people on board who should have been fired for laziness, lying, sexual harassment, and other serious problems. If you're a person who cares about your work, you will struggle here. If you're lazy, you'll coast! Sales is overpaid and everyone else is underpaid. I genuinely wonder how the company has survived this long, and suspect it will be sold within a few years.

Pros

The company is small, so the contributions of developers are pretty much immediately visible and have real impact on the customers. This makes job satisfaction great, especially when compared to places where one is a small cog in a big machine. Working days are 9 hours long, but we get every other Friday off. There's also an annual company retreat, which is a great opportunity to interact in person with the people you only get to see remotely the rest of the time.

Cons

Compensation and benefits are above average in terms of national reality, but below the standards of larger software companies.

Pros

Incredible group of people no matter which team you work with. Their culture is unlike anything I've had before - you're a human being first and an employee second. I personally got to experience this as I was going through an extremely difficult pregnancy. The amount of support I received across the board is something I will be forever thankful for! Management is wonderful. Everyone is free to contribute ideas/suggestions, and they're very open to giving new things a try. I personally had never had a sales role prior to this one, but their trainings and guidance were extremely helpful, and they work with you to develop those skills! Expectations are not unrealistic whatsoever. Having an off month? They're there to help with whatever you need to turn it around! And this attitude goes all the way up the chain. Work is very flexible - the company is fully remote. There is one in-person company meet-up once a year (one additional in-person meet-up in January if you're in sales/customer success), and it's probably the most fun I've ever had with my co-workers! I grew so much with this company in such a short amount of time. I respect their values, and the direction the company is going. They're truly making the world a better place!

Cons

The only con stems from an aspect that is actually a pro! Being fully remote is wonderful - My only suggestion was adding another company meet-up during the year to get together a little more!
