Pros

12-hour shifts, every other weekend is three days off, clean, dry and safe workplace, great team building opportunities, incredible technology advancements, making a difference by saving lives over the telephone. Retirement, healthcare, the best 911 Center in the State of Michigan, union shop, lots of time off available.

Cons

24/7 operations, negative environment due to nearly every call being a problem or bad news, can be emotionally and mentally draining if you do not find things to do outside of work. 10-12 month training period, which can become difficult if frequent turn-over. Not a high paying job and will get worse with Michigan's current administration targeting public employees. Sitting for long lengths of time and finding out things about families and neighbors you might not want to know.

Pros

You get paid at the end of the day

Cons

Sheriff, undersheriff, chief deputy all worthless. Department currently failing and possibly in disrepair. Policies and procedures need revamped from basic out dated policies to day to day policies that are in place that are not enforced properly. Corruption with money within the department is unquestionable with department not fulfilling contracts with townships throughout the county and still cashing in on those pay days. Floating funds around the department to where they need it when they need it. Morale has bottomed out in both divisions with a failing retention rate and lack of attempts to retain quality staff. Due to this fact, the bar has been lowered significantly for new hires to pass. No one will fail training and get fired from the department because of the amount of disparity that currently resides within the department.
