Pros

Fantastic team who are supportive, enthusiastic, and great at what they do! Social aspects of the job are a big plus. The mission of EJF is fantastic, and if the organisation was run properly, they could do wonderful things.

Cons

Management has no respect for their staff, which leads to a real lack of delegation, no investment in career growth, and problematic management structures. You’re treated as if you should be grateful to work there, whilst not receiving any benefits or incentives, which leads to a high staff turnover rate. Weird management structures result in important conversations about operations, funding, and even personal & career growth taking place without the relevant people in the room. Extremely capable staff are not given any responsibility, and benefits such as travel or ownership over projects are withheld until the co-founders believe you have proven your loyalty. Staff are left working by themselves the majority of the time, with little to no direction, mentorship, or guidance. As mentioned previously, positive reviews should be taken with a pinch of salt.

Pros

The main (and perhaps only) pro of EJF as a company is its admirable mission - protecting the environment and fighting for human rights. It also has a good work/life balance, and the hours aren't too bad.

Cons

I worked at EJF for 8 months. During this time, I can count on one hand the number of times I interacted with my boss, the CEO and co-founder Steve Trent. Due to the company's horizontal structure, Steve was the only person above me, and he never took the time to manage me - or even to be in communication and check my progress. Normally this would be alright, as I am motivated and self-sufficient, but the job required some trips to challenging environments where it was a matter of safety to have the support of my manager. After a tumultuous trip to Senegal, I tried to reach him through his assistant for a check-in, but I kept getting shot down and told he was "too busy." Even after telling Steve I was planning on leaving the company, no one checked in or gave me a call. There was no exit interview and no goodbye at all. I'm proud of the work I did for EJF, but it was a really lonely and confusing experience. I would strongly encourage anyone considering work at an environmental non-profit to look elsewhere.

Pros

I have been consistently impressed by the professionalism and commitment of my team. Everyone works with purpose, collaborates thoughtfully, and brings a high level of expertise to the table. Our team produces high-quality reports and achieves meaningful results that we can be proud of. The work environment encourages learning, critical thinking, and impact-driven action.

Cons

The organization is in an active phase of building and strengthening its internal structures. This creates opportunities to help shape processes, though it may require navigating some ambiguity along the way.
