Pros
The main (and perhaps only) pro of EJF as a company is its admirable mission - protecting the environment and fighting for human rights. It also has a good work/life balance, and the hours aren't too bad.
Cons
I worked at EJF for 8 months. During this time, I can count on one hand the number of times I interacted with my boss, the CEO and co-founder Steve Trent. Due to the company's horizontal structure, Steve was the only person above me, and he never took the time to manage me - or even to be in communication and check my progress. Normally this would be alright, as I am motivated and self-sufficient, but the job required some trips to challenging environments where it was a matter of safety to have the support of my manager. After a tumultuous trip to Senegal, I tried to reach him through his assistant for a check-in, but I kept getting shot down and told he was "too busy." Even after telling Steve I was planning on leaving the company, no one checked in or gave me a call. There was no exit interview and no goodbye at all.
I'm proud of the work I did for EJF, but it was a really lonely and confusing experience. I would strongly encourage anyone considering work at an environmental non-profit to look elsewhere.
