    Pros

There are a lot of pros for this company - I feel that it has been massively put down in some of these reviews by current employees. Expenses: The expenses package is very generous. You get accommodation, food and travel paid for during your working week. Your flight and transfer costs are also absorbed by the company. Training: Training for the Capital Markets Programme is somewhat intense - you have workshop classes for your first few weeks to prepare you for the CMTP modules you have to complete over a two year course. There is also a focus on PRMIA examinations - this gives the candidate accreditation in Risk Management, which for young employees with little experience is an incredible boost. This is also paid for by the company. Social: The company is filled with well educated and sociable people. The company organizes get-togethers for staff to meet outside of the workplace. This could be dinner and drinks, paintballing, watching a match... Nearly anything. Opportunity: There are incredible opportunities for travel. You could be sent to Singapore, New York, London, Sydney... The potential is endless. And with the great expenses package this is very appealing. Management: There is a plethora of fantastic managers within the FD system. I have had little or no issue with them in my time here.

    Cons

The only con I can list is that the HR/Accommodation team need some more experienced members. It seems that there is a lot of placement students and not enough experienced hires - which can lead to confusion or error in some respects.

I have been working at First Derivatives full-time for less than a year

    Pros

    - Great travel opportunity: 10 weeks after starting I was sent to the US where I am on a project for 20 months all going well. - Significant compensation: Basic salary starts off at 19k GBP which is low, but with good quality accommodation, weekly living expenses of 280USD, and four return flights to Ireland per annum, overall valuation of gross compensation is probably between 50k and 60k GBP. NB This is for those who are sent to the US. Expense rates, accommodation price, and # of return flights varies based on location. - Logistics taken care of: Flights, accommodation are all taken care of you don't need to research either which is great as you don't need to setup wifi/tv, furnish the house at your own expense, etc. - External accreditation: Opportunity to gain external accreditation on the company's dime in PRMIA, Java, and other certifications is afforded to you. - Sense of camaraderie: Your initial 4 weeks (at a minimum) are spent in Newry along with other members of your intake. I really enjoyed my time in Newry and made some great friends during my time there, and maintain contact with them now even though we no longer work in the same location. The time builds a great sense of community. This is dependent on the individual though as Newry is a quiet town.

    Cons

    - Job description: There isn't really a detailed job description available on the website, I noticed across potential employers though so it isn't specific to FD. Many companies use the same "candyfloss" terminology to make the job seem enticing without giving any real substance as to the day-to-day tasks. - Being placed on a project: This is from other people's experiences whereby they ended up staying in Newry not on a project for some time. This is far from ideal as you are not working on anything other than completing internal training modules. This is dependent on projects that arise from clients, but is worth noting that this may occur. - Quality of project: While I am happy with how my project turned out it is worth noting that there have been cases whereby friends of mine have ended up on projects they didn't enjoy. This is a risk of consultancy work naturally so worth bearing in mind. - Location: You are allowed to specify preferences for your location but this may not be accommodated due to projects specifics. It can come down to luck sometimes in where you get placed. For example you may want to go to New York but if there's no project there after a month or two they'll send you to London, and after a month there a project could come available in New York but they won't be able to pull you off of your project. The above while they are negative aspects of working for the company, they're topics that people should be aware of before applying. I knew that I wouldn't necessarily have much of a say in terms of where I would end up or for how long and am okay with that. If you are not, this may not be the right company for you.
