Pros

Attracts interesting coworkers, allows for a relatively independent work experience after a certain period of time, access to lots of interesting food products and a few people who have real knowledge about it, 20% employee discount, very little managerial oversight, lots of fun problem solving as every day is a little different, pretty hard to get fired as management has a very non-confrontational style.

Cons

No training process whatsoever leading to an extremely varied and unreliable standard of doing things from employee to employee, no set process to get feedback or chance to negotiate raises, extremely chaotic and stressful days when a moving part breaks somewhere up the line (super often), lack of care or responsibility taken from management, petty and foolish management decisions in regards to the promotion and positions of employees, constant barrage of useless email spam and no useful information from management, unprofessional management (name calling/in-fighting/airing grievances in the presence of junior employees/etc), no actual access to tasting or learning about the food that is the selling point for a lot of people (you have to pay for everything and they have very little information on the products or manufacturers available to employees... though you are, to a degree, expected to know this information and give customers information on taste in a kind of catch-22), customers are absolutely out of control.

Pros

-Some products are really cool (but unaffordable) -Lower ranking staff are kind and cool

Cons

The new owner will completely manipulate you and anyone around her to squeeze every last penny while talking sh*t about everyone behind their back. Supervisors and managers who hold the store together while wearing so many hats and are worked to the bone with awful salaries get thrown under the bus the moment they decide to leave (because ownership and upper management in the upstairs office have no idea how to treat people who work there). I’ve heard so many awful things said about amazing former employees who left because they couldn’t handle the high school gossip and poor leadership of management. (One former employee sent us an all staff email talking about how bad and unprofessional they are at another Formaggio location too while quitting.) Managers who have been there for years and run entire departments get no verbal appreciation or support even though they deal with so much BS… idk why they stay. The culture is just so awful. It used to be an institution and a really cool place to learn but it’s lost all of that. Staff barely have any time to learn about the hundreds of products they carry. Oh and the customers… some are nice but the vast majority come from so much wealth and privilege the look down upon every staff member and will absolutely talk down to you or yell at you to find them later date milk or lemonade or whatever and management just allows it to happen. It’s just a sad and dehumanizing experience all around from customers to owners.
