Pros

GBH was my first full-time employer out of college, I think it's a very warm and collaborative environment with lots of experienced people more than willing to be mentors, and it's a wonderful place to grow and learn. The environment is very chill and oriented toward work-life balance (I imagine this is a great place to work if you're juggling work with being a parent), and the office has a relaxed dress code. Benefits are also pretty competitive, though a bit expensive. The office is really nice and modern, and the recent efforts of the new DEIA office show — there's been more in-person events, free food (!), and opportunities for you to make your voice heard, especially if you're a member of a traditionally marginalized community. If you want to work in public media, this is really the vanguard. It's a place with a lot of heart and commitment to its mission. Also, as of 2023 at least, they offer free parking (which comes in handy if you're ever at neighboring Roadrunner for live music)!

Cons

Pay is unfortunately not competitive with most sectors, and certainly not keeping up with the cost of living in Boston, leading to some people I know who want to remain at GBH moving out of state. Office is in an up-and-coming (?) area of Brighton that is unfortunately pretty inconvenient to access via public transit. There isn't great back-and-forth between all departments and managers/upper managers can operate without a lot of oversight. It's also a little bit of a slow-moving and traditional place when it comes to career mobility, so prepare to put the years in if you're gearing at upward movement in the company.

Pros

Benefits were good and some coworkers were great.

Cons

This place was awful. The benefits were amazing, but the pay was so low that it was impossible to save any money no matter how hard anyone in my department tried. There is little or no tolerance for anyone neurodivergent or non-Christian. In my time there, I saw many people of both categories "laid off" or driven out of the workplace due to overwhelming stress brought on by low pay and constant existential threat of unemployment due to politics. There is no opportunity for growth of any kind, and there is so much variability and ambiguity within roles and titles, that it is very easy to continually shovel more work onto people without ever giving them a raise or change in title. Managerial favoritism is very apparent, and the managers do not manage their workers. Of the two managers I dealt with, the second ranking is spineless and plays favorites while also sloughing off all training and quality control duties to his subordinates. This makes managing poorly performing workers impossible. That boss's boss is a tyrant who micromanages, yells, and makes everyone feel disposable. There was a brief period of time where wages actually got increased and people felt valued. Then they laid off 30% of the workforce. Oh, and if you get laid off, it's company policy that your manager won't give you any references other than to verify your dates of employment. Soul-sucking, heartless, corporate culture masked as mission-driven public-service.
