Pros
- good support programs such as IT, Safety, Engineering for ops to leverage - a good place to gain experience and move on. If you choose to become a "lifer" and stay, you will be stuck unless you brown nose or are favored by senior leaders. - all over the country in case you move or need to transfer.
Cons
- highly political, conflict when trying to promote or transfer (hourly & salary). Easy to get stuck in your current position. Will find ways to tell you there are opportunities in current roles in order to save cost on salary overhead. - slammed with "busy" work that consumes your hours leaving no time for development or free thinking for problem solving. - Top down management from senior leaders often leads to intense stress and micromanaging of middle managers. Flavor of the week culture where stressful new expectations are rolled out just to check off boxes for senior leaders. - Salary is not competitive or commensurable for the amount of responsibilities and work that you will do. - Easy to get "worked" out through coachings, corrective actions, or improvement plans. - No appreciation for operations salary leadership. Stretched thin on leaders, expectations increase week over week.
