A great place to work, let down by crushingly low wages - Senior Officer (Technical) Gambling Commission Employee Review

Pros

Excellent city centre location. Spacious office. I had a very supportive manager and team around me. Civil service pension contributions are generous, as are some of the salary sacrifice benefits.

Cons

Wages were completely stagnant. No real policy or movement to move up financially within your pay scale without substation job re-evaluation. The official line seems to be, if you don't like being paid so little, leave. So you end up with staff learning the business, how to do your job, then you have to go and find more money in another job. Very few paid training opportunities to further your career. One paid course made available in nearly six years. A strong culture of staff helping each other out. Plenty of ED&I discussions, but how well it works is something I couldn't judge as I'm fortunate to be born into a race that doesn't see much in the way of oppression. Total reward: A good concept, but unless you're able to make use of the savings offered on goods you probably can't afford, lumping salary, pension, annual leave, flexible working & retail offers into "total reward" feels a little hollow when you look at your payslip.

Pros

People are brilliant. People in my team and most of the management. A lot of effort is made by the Executive team to listen to staff and to continuously improve things. Most of them are very down to earth and approachable and they care. I raised a longstanding issue with the Acting CEO and it was addressed really well within 24 hours. I said sorry for taking up her time with something quite trivial compared to all the other tasks she has to do. The reply was so nice. Another occasion, time was given up to give me very useful feedback on a paper I submitted. I learned a lot from that and I really appreciated when it was noticed by the Acting CEO office team that I’d acted on the feedback the next time. It made me feel valued and like the effort I made to improve was worth it.

Cons

The pay is not brilliant for the work you have to do but it is very rewarding to feel like you’ve made a difference. Can be exhausting because resources are stretched and regulation can be a thankless task where you please nobody by doing the right thing. Pension is decent so you have to look at the package I guess.
