Pros

As others noted, the flexibility here is great and lets people set schedules that work for them. Dress code is casual and many of the employees are hard-working, friendly people. The organization supports positive goals and gives employees a lot of freedom. GA tries to be involved in many endeavors, so it's often interesting. Some people loved it here.

Cons

When I was there the company was going through a lot of change and employee/project turnover. Many projects were terminated partway through or were not adequately supported for success. There didn't seem to be an overall strategy to anything. In fact, management seemed proud of how agile the company tried to be, while glossing over many instances of overpromising and underdelivering. I wish there would have been a stronger commitment to following evidence, data, and good science. I think it's a good potential place to start a career, but I've certainly worked at places that were far more professionally fulfilling and better at getting good work done. While I was there several employees were targeted and were prevented from being successful in their roles, seemingly in ways unconnected to their actual job performance. The CEO is often off site, and her brusque management style can be harmful.

Pros

Genetic Alliances is a non-profit organization that gives interns from all over the United States the opportunity to learn more about rare genetic conditions and to push themselves to build on the foundation that the organization has laid to improve access for patients and families affected by these conditions. Management is passionate and driven to make a difference.

Cons

Honestly have no cons about this internship perfect summer to learn new things and grow my knowledge on how genetic alliance as a company runs and helps people with rare conditions. I do wish the program was longer so much more work interns can bring to the table year-round.

Pros

Lots of room to advance my skills and learn new things. I started in a role that suited my background and skills but this work allowed me to run project and programs that were new and they opened up a whole new window into public health and how working with government agencies and partners unfolded. Since leaving, I have definitely leaned on that experience even more than expected. There is strong tenure among many senior team members which goes a long way to creating confidence in the future and the role GA plays in the space.

Cons

It's challenging to work with a lean team at times - particularly when so much travel was necessary for us to "be" where we needed to be. It meant many key/senior people were often not in the office as much and it's harder to collaborate that way.
