Pros
Start up environment meaning your contributions actually matter. You end up taking many responsibilities and you learn a lot while doing it. This is not a job/internship you can just coast through, you are actively challenged with new problems as you help build this company.
Cons
Mostly open-source software, you don't have access to the expensive libraries that the other companies have but you are able express your own ideas by making your own (often better).
