Pros
Extensive field specific experience. Overall freedom. Lots of oppurtunity for over-time. Benefits including company car, work related bonuses (rarely) Job oppurtunities available without having a qualification or related experience in surveying. Oppurtunity to travel. Work related social events.
Cons
There is very little work/life balance, standard hours are 8 - 5.30. More often than not over time is mandatory which includes early morning starts and late finishes of various degrees. Extreme lack of training, the job suits people with initiative, someone willing to put in the extra hours to train themselves. Furthermore there is no further training beyond the basic skills you pick up on site, no qulifications or anything related. The Remuneration doesnt suit the amount of work and commitment required, or the skills needed to perform properly. In addition pay increases are speculative and depend on arbitrary preferences rather than a set standard. Poor organization in general, specifics include short notice on where you will be working, if you will be staying away on site and hours you will be working.
