Pros

Used to have great people.

Cons

Absent leadership that have no idea how to run a business. With barely any work and a huge hiring spree in 2022, Gretel rounded out the year by laying people off as a holiday surprise right after throwing a fancy - and expensive - party. Starting 2023 off strong, they laid off more people after some original "miscalculations". Do not work there (not that they can afford to hire you).

Pros

Tight-knit team. Felt like family. Good, kind, fun people at the top of their game. The bar for exceptional work is high and pushes you to be at your best. There's a constant questioning and curiosity of the work, which may feel maddening to some, but helps ensure that all angles and ideas are considered, the team is aligned, and the work is as good as it can be. If you embrace that ethos, you'll do well and will emerge better for it.

Cons

That constant pushing and questioning can sometimes cause stress and anxiety—especially in the moments before a big meeting or presentation. This can be complicated by the fact that designers are very involved in strategy, which may make you wonder about roles and ownership. I also think that there sometimes feels like a reluctance to embrace a set framework/approach to brand strategy, which can make it harder for a freelancer to learn the ropes. On the one hand, the tailoring of the framework/approach to each project is probably what keeps Gretel sharp and their clients happy, but can leave a little to be desired in terms of structure, guidance, and clarity from a newcomer's perspective.
