Pros
They have paid for my training. Excellent promotion prospects and on board training for deck officers who want it. I started as a second mate out of Passenger ships. They have kept me current on all my STCW certificates, Paid for my full Dynamic Positioning licence from start to finish, and paid my salary whilst at school for my chief mate unlimited ticket. I've had time off for my wedding, and the birth of my child without too much trouble, and crew changes have mostly been OK. And in the current downturn, Deck officers have managed to keep their jobs so far.
Cons
They don't pay the best compared to other offshore companies, and in the UK fleet you have to pay UK tax, which adds up to around 30%. If you're lucky you can claim it back ,but no guarantees. However, if you stick around for more than a year, that's when you'll start to see the rewards in terms of training.
