Most horrible experience of my life! - Store Manager Harbor Freight Tools Employee Review

Pros

SM pay, bonuses, benefit prices, amount of vacation days were good.

Cons

Early mornings (4 am and earlier, never told about this during interview). Working under extreme pressure to perform, while constantly having payroll cut by upper management. Never feeling like you have a chance to get ahead in your work because you never have a reasonable amount of hours to use. Part-timers make minimum wage, but expectations are outrageous. Upper management isn't willing to train you properly, and not willing to help you when you need it - they'd rather sit back and say, you just gotta do it, figure it out, and we'll write you up later when you fail. As a manager, I have to deal with employees who call off sick often (because of too-liberal sick leave policies). The only people in this area who will work for such a wage are drug addicts (because the company does not drug test) and people on public assistance who lack basic work ethics. The company doesn't care, because they know they can find people that will work under these conditions, even if for the short term. Instead of developing good employees, they turn-and-churn employees, constantly firing and hiring, but never giving managers hours/payroll to train new associates. Worst experience of my life.

Pros

Great benefits, fast paced environment, good teamwork. I liked the hours, you get an education about tools, whether from your coworkers or the customers. And speaking of the customers, they were on the better side for retail. Most are down to earth and easy to converse with.

Cons

Supply chain issues, many parts would never be replenished, despite being featured, advertised, and on display. That would often lead to tensions with customers. Aggressive time constraints on tasks. Sidewalk sales, holidays, and also coincidentally inclement weather days, can be quite busy and therefore stressful. Especially if there's call outs, but if you have a good management team, you'll have good staff that will want to work for them.
