Pros

Health Catalyst used to the be best gig in town... bar none. I felt honor (and the responsibility that comes with that privilege) to be part of the mission "to be the catalyst for massive, measurable, data-informed healthcare improvement." It's a beautiful mission and I really believed that Health Catalyst had the team members, the vision, and the ability to execute on that mission.

Cons

I feel compelled to write this review, because something fundamental changed. Granted no one could have predicted a global pandemic and the resulting market chaos. However, a switch flipped and instead of meeting the moment, Health Catalyst turned inward and started the long and painful process of imploding. Culturally, we are quickly becoming distant associates instead of real team members. Important team building opportunities have largely ceased... at first due to the pandemic, now due to budget cuts. Productivity has measurably dropped as "working" from home has turned into entitled "coasting." The office is largely empty and sterile. I've been saddened to see culture wars emerge that exposed the ugliness of some team members who have become comfortable with their isolation. I mourn the loss of connection and don't see this changing for the better even now.

I am excited about the strategic adjustments we’ve made that I believe reflect building strong and deep partnerships with our clients. The shift to remote-first has been ongoing since before the pandemic, however, we can do better as far as building connection and community. Several others have shared this feedback as well. Great Talent & Culture: The people here are highly capable, collaborative, and committed to helping each other succeed. The partnership between onshore and offshore teams works well and is a real strength. There’s a culture of grit and stability that has helped the company navigate multiple major transitions over the years. Mission-Critical Engineering: The work involves complex data infrastructure that requires deep technical expertise. It can be demanding, but seeing these systems run successfully and support real-world operations is consistently rewarding.

Cons

Wage Compression and Retention Risk: Compensation for tenured and high-performing staff has not kept pace with the market for specialized data engineering and support leadership. In practice, tenure can feel undervalued or even penalized. This creates risk around losing institutional knowledge and operational continuity. Stagnant Career Progression: Contrary to stated expectations, strong performance ratings do not consistently translate into meaningful, market-aligned compensation growth. The process of how compensation is benchmarked lacks clarity in practice, obscuring how compensation decisions are made and what is required to advance.
