Pros

Pay is hire than others dsp jobs around. Start at 10.95. Get a $0.25 raise each year. Mileage paid but make sure to get it approved. Its reimbursed at $0.40 a mile. Always need people. So loads of shifts always available. You can work with many different individuals or group homes. You can refuse the home if you are uncomfortable. You can request to work with an individual or group home and stick with it. There are those who need assisted with community needs like grocery shopping, going out with friends, visiting stores for fun, going to movies, going to sports events (football in Indy or Nascar in Indy), those who need rides to clubs like a social club or book club. If you like driving around and moving, those individuals are fantastic for you. There are those who are bound to the home. If you do not like moving around a lot, these individuals are amazing. There are individuals who are more challenging behavior wise. There are high cognitive and low functioning. They may pose an interest with you if you like problem solving. Try the job out and venture to different people. This isnt an office job, you go to peoples homes. Please respect their homes and HIPAA. Hours are flexible to your schedule. As a college student, I apreciate the flexibility to work full time and be a full time student plus a full time family. This is a great job to have for extra money on the side. You can get 1 hour shifts to 16 hour shifts. Just ask and typically you recieve.

Cons

Miscommunication happens frequently. Pay can be messed up often. Its happened to me about 10 times in two years. If the pay is incorrect then you get what is missing on Wednesday. There is little room to rise to a new position. And many people are burnt out of this job within the 3-5th month. The first 3 months can be difficult to manage. If you decide to travel with clients to and from places mileage may take a minute to come back. But is suppose to be on the check within the next week. Always let the supervisors know that you may be tired of a client. Dont feel bad needing to leave them. It is better to take a break and find someone new than to stay and become burnt out. It helps to have some change here and there. The clients understand too.
