Don’t Do It - Find Something Else - Teacher Horry County Schools Employee Review

Pros

Generally you will work with some awesome people. Teachers are usually a caring bunch, and depending on your grade level/team you will probably have takeaway grade level support and good coworkers. Management is a toss up. Example - great instructional coaches one year (principal ran off one of the two) but principal was terrible.

Cons

I’m writing what I wish someone has told me. Your classroom size will vary all year long. Horry County is transient, so one month you may have 19 kids and the next 30+. Technology will sometimes work, student behavior will be all over the place and you will have no admin support. Principals are a toss up - mine played favorites, was dismissive and judgmental and started each school meeting with prayer. She also didn’t like me (I was told this by other teachers) but she was always nice to my face. But she also once threatened a student and asked if they wanted her to go get a switch off the tree outside the window….As a new teacher, you will be required to attend monthly meetings (2-3 hrs) for “new teacher training” with homework assignments (we built a personal website for blogging) that is Ann unpaid. Your daily planning hour will be routinely taken for “training” so all planning work is completed after school. Oh, and you eat lunch with your students because you will be monitoring them during lunch and recess.
