Pros
- Good health & dental insurance - Retirement and life insurance - Job stability - Some opportunities for advancement (depends on your manager and site)
Cons
Working as an IRS CSR is extremely stressful job. You are dealing with the public and anyone can call you. A lot of taxpayers will be upset (exacerbated by long hold times) and yell at you or talk to you in a rude tone or outright cuss you out. The training does not really prepare you for when you're on the phone. There are a lot of complex issues you will have to deal with and you'll sometimes find yourself wading through many different manuals and their subsections to find the answer. Your calls are also monitored at least 4 times a month to generate your "rating." Also "national" will monitor some of your calls at random. Oh and you only get a certain amount of time for a call. This is called "average handling time" and it's around 12 minutes per call. All of this is extremely stressful and mentally/emotionally draining.
