Pros

I worked at icddr,b for nearly two decades as an Assistant Scientist in the Virology Laboratory before retiring in January 2026. Over this long tenure, I had the opportunity to contribute to impactful public health research and collaborate with both national and international experts. Pros: icddr,b offers a high-quality research environment with strong emphasis on scientific rigor and innovation. The institute is internationally recognized for its contributions to infectious disease research and public health. Excellent learning opportunities, especially for early-career scientists and trainees. Exposure to multidisciplinary research, advanced laboratory techniques, and global collaborations enhances professional growth. The Virology Laboratory, in particular, engages in diverse research areas including viral infections, diagnostics, and vaccine-related studies, making it a stimulating workplace for researchers. Collaborative and intellectually enriching environment with access to international training and research networks.

Cons

Cons: Many positions are contractual rather than permanent, which can create uncertainty regarding long-term career stability. The institute is heavily dependent on donor funding, and periodic funding constraints may affect project continuity, job security, and resource availability.
