Pros
- A magical experience seeing kids react to and engage with the theatre and arts ed classes.
- Very fun, family-like environment for most staff, lots of silly and fun times around holidays. Many of the best people I know have gone through Imagination Stage in one way or another.
- There's a good chance you'll be able to develop skills in areas you have less experience in, and gain more responsibilities that looks great on a resume.
- They want to be better. There is full transparency as we go through tough times, and most if not all of the senior staff are very open to having frank conversations with employees at all levels (regardless of whether the conversation or opinion/concern being expressed is relevant to the employee's job description). The equity, diversity, access, & inclusion elements is definitely a work in progress, but a lot is happening and slowly but surely improving.
Cons
- It's just too much, too often. A solid majority of positions are significantly affected by the fact that the org consistently expands its programming while the number of staff members either stays stagnant or even decreases. As much as you are told not to overwork yourself, there is little put in place to prevent that from being the case.
- The salaries are generally very low and the benefits are rough and often being cut (though the health insurance is pretty excellent, to be fair!). If you start at the bottom with your salary, it makes more sense to leave fairly quickly than to stick around and work very hard for too long in the hopes that you'll be able to catch up.
