Pros

Excellent place to get a start in the intelligence sector. The company provides analysts the ability to focus on topics that interest them, and with the day-to-day incident gathering, analysts are able to build a strong understanding of the issues that impact the security of countries at a granular level.

Cons

Incident reporting can be a bit repetitive at times, but as long as you have a high-level understanding of how clients use the data, it makes it more interesting.

Pros

Salaries were competitive. Codebase was left in good shape by the departing engineering team. I don't have to work there anymore.

Cons

I joined a vibrant, high-performing engineering team that was transitioning to a new phase after this startup was purchased by private equity to form a new group of companies (Sigma 7) in the threat/risk space. Sadly, a total lack of defined or coherent strategy from the top down over the last two years slowly degraded our ability to achieve any worthwhile product discovery or engineering. This and other contract losses led to the engineering team and other product-related teams being let go to save money. Such a shame. I expect the rot to continue, as those in charge only seem to be interested in protecting their own positions.

Pros

Difficult one this - relaxed atmosphere and some nice colleagues. Analyst jobs give chance to learn what goes on in the world and serves as a decent entry to the industry if you can put up with the negatives. Management at the company level is good and approachable (the problems start at the parent company level).

Cons

Join as an entry level analyst and it will be poor pay, horrible shifts and repetitive work. Get promoted and you have an impressive title for the length of time but still bad pay, repetitive work and you still just do data entry and call it analysis. Middle of nowhere in Durham so cheapish living but considering the lack of pay raises even for those who have been there years you couldn't survive elsewhere. Rules are inconsistent and some staff that should have been fired get rewarded, mainly thanks to HR (which came in with the Sigma7 buy out) being useless. The direction from the umbrella company Sigma7 is pathetic - loads of execs changing their minds and rewarding themselves while the people who actually do the work get shafted, vanity projects waste money then get canned. No perks, no rewards and lots of unfulfilled promises. Stay long enough and you will get Stockholm syndrome and begin to thing that grinding it out for peanuts in the hope of one day being rewarded in some way is normal.
