Pros

You will meet some of the most passionate, hard-working people in the workforce here! and you will also get hands-on experience working with refugees and understanding the resettlement system. It's an exceptional start to a career in the international domain.

Cons

This was an unpaid internship, which meant that I had to keep a second job just to pay for my food/transportation. also, the full-time employees are paid very little as well, and it is very emotionally taxing work. The burn-out rate is very high because it's ultimately not a sustainable lifestyle for more than a couple of years, if that. Also a downside of resettlement work at the moment is that it's not supported by the current administration, but that isn't a reflection on the IRC.

Pros

Some great people who work very hard and care deeply. On-the-ground international staff are truly inspiring and dedicated.

Cons

Recent budget cuts driven by federal executive orders have created a strained internal culture. Some teams outside of individual and private fundraising have found themselves in the position of repeatedly having to justify their value in order to access basic resources, which has affected morale and collegiality across the organization. Limited career growth opportunities due to cuts.
