Helps low-income students start a degree path and often careers. It is great to see a student's life be positively changed. Most faculty and staff are truly motivated to help students first.
Cons
Faculty and Staff are paid and treated very poorly. Unfortunately HR and a majority of the current administration is not interested in putting student's needs first, nor supporting what the faculty and staff need to support their students. Those administrators who do support faculty and staff are terminated. The minimum loading for full-time faculty is well above 40 hours/week (15 credit hours of classes or 21 contact hours per term), plus office hours, advising, and outreach to the community. Multiply the contact hours by 2.25 and that is the federal average on time spent on preparing for and grading a class in addition to teaching the course. 2.25*21=47.25 hrs/week on just classes. Most vice-chancellors interpret as meeting the minimum for both before an overload, instead of understanding hitting either one is a maximum at which faculty should begin to get paid an overload contract. Some faculty have taught up to 12 classes per term. How can someone be responsive to students with that kind of load?
