Pros
taking ice cream and other stuff for free when you weren't supposed to just to get a bit of happiness on the job
Cons
i was with this company at their biggest store for a year and a half, and it was the worst work experience i've ever had in my life. it's a decent job for high schoolers and college students, but not the best as the work culture is extremely childish and hostile at times. at the time i got hired, i really needed the money, so i outperformed and worked (albeit) harder than necessary. the location i worked at was always busy, so working hard was never the issue. started out as a scooper and got promoted to supervisor halfway through my time there. spring/summer is the busiest season there, with fall/winter being slower but still has rushes every now and then. customers are very entitled and rude, with no disregard to the fact that JP is perpetually short staffed all the time. management are greedy and ruthless, purposefully keeping the busiest stores (assembly and harvard, for example) short staffed so that they can make the most profit by using less people (the result of which are tired, overworked, and exhausted employees). most employees are high school and college students, which means that there's a lot of gossip and drama thrown around; the work environment is unnecessarily immature way too often. they will not accommodate your availability and needs; there's a rule that if you don't call or show up for a shift you automatically get fired. it's no surprise that the turnover rate is extremely high at this company and no one ever stays for more than 3-6 months. there's really no such thing as "calling out" at JP licks. working in retail overall will make you develop somewhat thick skin, but the verbal, emotional, and at one point physical harassment from customers, management, and food delivery drivers was what led me to finally quit. the pay ($12/hr) is not worth the intense labor they put you through. supervisors get a meager raise to $14/hr, which is worse considering the fact that we have a lot more responsibilities than scoopers and are basically the acting manager when there isn't a manager in the store. when people are promoted at JP licks, they don't immediately give the pay raise once promoted, and will often wait MONTHS to do so. months went by after I got promoted until I noticed that I had not gotten the pay raise that I was supposed to get. tips are meh, but they depend on how many hours you've worked in a week (not daily), and they get dispersed in cash every week or two. I loved working here at first, but as time went on and store policies changed along with management's attitude, I started to dread coming into work every day. they really don't care about you at all, and will force you to work if you're sick or injured. my coworkers were disrespectful of my time and boundaries, and would often put me in situations I would specifically ask them not to put me into. its considered NORMAL for supervisors to pull anywhere from 10- to 13-hour shifts. you almost never leave at the end of your shift when you're supposed to because they will ask (but really) have you stay after the end of your shift to do more work for them. management is way stricter and imposes a lot more rules towards people who close than people who open. dishes aren't washed thoroughly at all, with the exception of (sometimes) having to serve people with allergies. this job is primarily a CLEANING job, so if cleaning constantly isn't your thing, then this isn't the job for you. most people that i've worked with during my time at this company developed some kind of mental health issue, most commonly anxiety and mild depression, and more often than not people were always so stressed out because of how busy it usually is while having to work through it all understaffed as hell. please do not support this company; they emotionally abuse their employees and make it okay so that customers feel like they can do the same (and worse)! contrary to what other people believe, we do not get a lot of benefits and the ones we go get are terrible for the amount of labor we are subjected to do. the ice cream is so overpriced and honestly not good at all compared to what other local ice cream chains have to offer.
