Pros

Smart, friendly coworkers make the environment bearable.

Cons

The place is very disorganized and constantly changing. The staff changes frequently (and at times abruptly), further complicating efforts by employees to effectively do their jobs. They are understaffed, so it's more of a learn-as-you-go process instead of having thorough, formal training. Communication between the staff and the publisher is poor at best. The majority of the staff is pretty young (early 20s), and although that keeps the office environment lively, it can be frustrating for more experienced people when their suggestions/comments go ignored. Employees are monitored, almost like children (weekly time sheets breaking down hours/duties worked, a sign-in sheet when entering and leaving the office). The office itself is messy and odd (lots of random paintings and statues around). Not a lot of paid time off (office not closed on days such as the day after Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, New Year's Eve) and their vacation policy differs based on hire (I was told that I had to wait 12 months to earn vacation time, whereas others hired after me were not required to do so). Because it's a small company, the medical benefits are very expensive.

Pros

John at JTE was a pleasure to work with and for. He is extremely knowledgeable and respected in the industry. I enjoyed my time there and working with the the rest of his team. He ran a tight ship and expected nothing less from his employees which was reflected in the exceptional work he did!

Cons

None that I can think of!

Pros

The company was a great introduction to publishing because of its small size. Employees have control over the entire process of producing a publication. I believe that I received good office experience that prepared me to seek publishing jobs in the future. Furthermore, the company is expanding and acquiring new publications and other products. This makes JTE an exciting place to work. Things frequently change, with new products being developed and new projects available for employees with some ambition who want to take the initiative. There is room for growth if you seize the opportunity. John, the boss, is a charismatic and helpful leader, who rewards fresh ideas and welcomes questions and constructive criticism.

Cons

The office is in a suburban area, and the office space does not provide much privacy. It is not an ideal office for someone seeking clearly defined tasks and responsibilities, since it is so frequently changing and expanding.
