Senior finance leadership created an unhealthy and high-pressure working environment that frequently resulted in stress, burnout, and high staff turnover. Expectations were often unclear, training and support were insufficient, and employees were regularly criticised without being given the structure or guidance needed to succeed. In my experience, capable employees were not developed effectively, and there appeared to be a culture where people who struggled under pressure were gradually pushed out of the department or left the business entirely. Several employees either transferred internally or chose to leave due to the environment and management approach. The wider business has strong commercial growth and talented individuals, but the finance culture lacked consistency, psychological safety, and supportive leadership. Junior management often appeared unable or unwilling to challenge poor behaviours, which allowed the environment to continue unchecked.
