Pros

Their mission is what pulls you in - they are great salesmen at selling the story.

Cons

As the November report mirrors, the only positive reviews are those who don't work directly in office. If you work directly in office, be prepared for a high-stress environment. Management wants everyone to be a family, but doesn't want them to have thoughts, feelings, or emotions towards anything they do. If you disagree with something the management says or privately communicate with management that his jokes are in fact incredibly sexist and hurtful, be prepared to be fired. Be prepared, no matter what your role actually is, to take care of all of the two founders as if they are your children. I don't mean this in a hyperbolic manner - you are expected to cook for them at least 3 meals a day, wash their clothes, take care of their pets, do their dishes, and grocery shop for them. One founder practices the illegal act of paying himself as little as he can so he can qualify for welfare, then uses the foodstamps to pay for groceries for the provided lunch for the in-office crew. The free lunches are cooked by other employees, regardless of what their actual roles are. And it isn't someone being allowed to bring their own homecooked meals or recipes to the table, they're bachelor recipes that you're not allowed to deviate from in any way or your will get fired - remember when I mentioned that one of the founders has to control everything? This is one way that he has to control for sure. I've seen people get fired for cooking eggs in the wrong way, and I've seen people fired for misunderstanding what the founder wanted for lunch that day. There are a lot of bought reviews of and reviews of people who have never actually had to work in an office with the founder for any period of time and I want to be as clear as possible regarding your actual work expectations when you're in the office for an extended period of time. When you come in they say the hours are flexible, but if you aren't there everyday staying until 8 or 9 at night, be prepared to be considered slacking. They have all their workers set up illegally as independent contractors, but they make you set a schedule and if you deviate from the schedule you set up, you're seen as slacking. Also, if you're in at 9am and leave at 5pm, you're seen as slacking - because the founder doesn't come into the office and isn't ready to work until 11-noon and he only counts the work you do if he watches you doing it. Don't expect any sort of work-life balance at this job. Be prepared to be paid the bare minimum wage. It's livable if you're absolutely desperate for work - but independent contractors are taxed at a higher rate than normal employees. Maybe if you were in a role where you weren't required to travel there it'd be livable, but spending an hour and a half's wages on transportation there and back daily is pretty ridiculous for the scope of the work you will be expected to do. I left because I could no longer handle being complicit in their illegal behavior nor deal with their abuse of power with the staff.

Pros

Please understand, I say all of this BOTH as a survivor of childhood cancer AND someone that Len Austrevich emotionally and mentally abused as an employee. There were no pros to this job. Thank god this company shut down. What little good they did for children with cancer was heavily outweighed by the misery that Len brought to his many employees of the years. The only positive was that many of my fellow co-workers were incredible people that also wanted to do good. I'm glad I got to meet them. Im sorry that they endured this abusive workplace.

Cons

This job was soul sucking. Its been years since I worked there and am leaving this review so people understand the real legacy of this place. It was one of the worst times in my life. There were some wonderful people working alongside me and I saw the light leave their eyes after a few months of scraping dog poop and cat vomit and cleaning the owners disgusting apartments - after being hired for a VIDEO PRODUCTION role. Read any of the negative reviews - they tell the real story. The positive reviews were written by management themselves or employees that were coerced / asked to write a positive review. FYI - Years ago we reported them to the Bureau of Labor - only to be told that J4M "didn't qualify as a real company" and therefore were out of the Bureaus jurisdiction. Just let that sink in for a minute.
