Pros

Kleinschmidt Associates provides unique work opportunities in a niche field. Many of the staff are well-qualified and easy to work with. The small size helps foster a tight-knit, family-like work environment. Staff are generally forward-thinking and environmentally conscious. Multiple offices throughout the country provide opportunities to work on varied, interesting projects and for travel. Flexible working hours help with a work-life balance. Opportunities exist for exposure to many types of work and projects. Nice office spaces provide a good working environment. The company has a good name and reputation within the field and works hard to promote staff happiness and engagement.

Cons

Kleinschmidt Associates has been going through transition for a period of several years as it works to stay relevant and engaged in the field. Many talented staff have unfortunately left due to multiple episodes of poor leadership from upper management. Many of us long-time employees have watched over the past five or so years as management has repeatedly failed to lead. A reliance on poor performance metrics and ineffective goals illustrates there are limits to "on the job learning". Power struggles and politics have fostered a toxic environment focused on preserving oneself. Years of hiring friends and family has created an inefficient and clumsy org chart. Favoritism leaves truly talented staff pigeonholed, underpaid, unrecognized, and forced to look for employment elsewhere. An extremely expensive program designed to foster the next company leaders unfairly invests in some employees and leaves others behind. Repeated preference to hiring in central Maine draws on a limited talent pool and hinders company and talent growth. The company has about 130 employees but operates with the bureaucracy of a 1,300 person company. The overall consensus among employees is salaries are low and benefits are expensive, especially for families.

Kleinschmidt Associates Response

Thank you for recognizing how Kleinschmidt’s size fosters a tight-knit work environment, and how we celebrate forward thinking and environmentally conscious behavior. Our long-held core values passionately encourage employees to develop and succeed in their chosen career path, enable a positive work-life balance through flexible work schedules, and cultivate a family-centered culture. While I’m disappointed to hear negative perceptions, we’ve certainly experienced significant changes this year. While we’ve grown by 10% in 2018, over 70% of these new hires are located outside Maine and 85% represent a new, younger generation. At the same time, a 9% reduction in overhead has dramatically reduced bureaucracy. We embrace diverse opinions, and constantly seek constructive feedback. I’m happy to report that most employees support our efforts to make Kleinschmidt a great place to work. In fact, our recent (May 2018) “Best Firms to Work For” survey indicated that more than 90% of our employees ranked us positively – with comments like “goes the extra mile for their employees”, and “best company I have worked for”. In thirty years at Kleinschmidt, I have never been prouder of our company or more enthusiastic about our future! Jon Christensen, CEO

Pros

Small niche firm where each project is different with new challenges, so you never get bored. Lots of opportunities to advance your career.

Cons

I've worked at four other firms during my career. Any cons I can think of aren't worth mentioning compared to those other firms.
