Pros
Most Kumon Centers are open two evenings per week though many differs on which nights they are open. The co-workers and company are generally nice, however, the franchisee always wants to make the optimal amount of money and will schedule many students for study hours after school. The parents usually like to wait in the lobby instead of their cars and this can be very noisy. That never seemed to bother the franchisees when they had a noisy lobby of 70 parents. I was the one who always had to go into the lobby and kindly tell the parents to talk quietly. The owners never encouraged them to wait in their cars in the parking lot where there was always plenty of parking.
Cons
I think the parents pay about $50 per hour and Kumon has them to very repetitive drills and the student may stay on one thing for a long time. When arriving, students turn in their HW from the past week and are issued HW for the upcoming week. There is too much paper and too many repetitive drills. The pay is very low. I am a fully licensed teacher in several areas with a license in ELL and one center barely wanted to pay me more than $13 per hour. The center where I now work pays me under $10 dollars per hour, a teacher with over 30 years experience. I have several high school students who earn more per hour than I do at this tutoring job.
