Pros

The kids were great to be around.

Cons

I was a teacher at a LA Promise Fund Charter school. These are my experiences. -During my interview, I was told I would be teaching 1 core subject. -During my first day of work, I told told that I would instead be teaching 5 different classes: a core class, an elective class, an advisory class, a math enrichment class, and an English enrichment class (Power Hour). It is my understanding that this will continue for the 2019-2020 year. This was a deliberate deception on LAPF’s part and set the tone for their unprofessional treatment of teachers. -I only had 3 prep periods every week. -Twice a week, I taught 3 90 minute periods and 2 60 minute periods in one school day. This was all without a prep/break period. -50% of the core 8th grade teachers left before the end of the 2018-2019 school year. -75% of their 8th grade staff did not return for the 2019-2020 school year. The middle school AP also left. -There is one single bathroom for all teachers at the 52nd St site, causing significant wait times. It was also out-of-service several times during the school year. -The 52nd Street site is an old Sunday School building. Classroom facilities and space were lacking to say the least. -Many of the administrators and staff in the lovely office building downtown have no education or teaching experience. In summary, LA Promise Fund was a horrible place to be a teacher and their staff turnover reflects this.
