Pros

The movies are of high production value. Your co-workers make the days bearable. Portland is great if you can bear the commute. You will also never play a better lunch time game of 4-square than you will at Laika.

Cons

Absolutely everything else. Depressing studio, with no windows, decorations (except for the main entrance) and the kind of stuffy air you can only get from people sandpapering little faces all day. Morale is always low, for good reasons. As everyone else mentions in these reviews, there is a hierarchical ladder that compares best to highschool. The leading man of the studio has never worked at any other animation studios, and thus has no clue how an animation studio should actually really run. There are a lot of unqualified people in strangely high positions, hiring more qualified people for extremely low pay to do their job for them, while making sucking up to the boss their primary responsibility. As great as the movies are, they have all bombed, yet they keep throwing money at the wrong places thanks to daddy Nike, and making up those losses by letting people go every couple of months. I mean. Literally, the studio is run by someone who used to rap under the name "Chilly Tee" (feel free to youtube). Come on. HR pays no attention to literally anything. I have never worked in an animation studio where most employees feel "bad" about talking with each other, or socially interacting with one another, at any hour of the day with the exception of lunch. It generally feels wrong to do so. The pay is incredibly low compared to industry standards. I know people that have worked there for 4+ years and received close to no salary increase although plenty of extra responsibility to undertake. Interns are paid the same rate as McDonald's employees. Industry experience doesn't really seem to be a negotiating factor either. Overall, if you have other options, take them instead.

Pros

Great people made for a solid culture. Commitment to excellence. International co-workers. Barista coffee and subsided onsite catering. Seems to be always striving to be better. Huge gains in sustainability and studio culture.

Cons

Location from Portland is a challenge. On the plus side the commute is pretty straightforward with no traffic as such. Usually made it to work in 20-30 minutes from downtown Portland

Pros

Literally nothing. Met a few cool people here but at what cost.

Cons

Laika loves to protect abusive employees and managers for some reason despite receiving multiple reports about the same person and their abusive patterns over and over and over again. Feels like a white supremacist company as they like to make a big show of their "diverse" community without taking absolutely any action at all to practice this in daily work life and surely don't do anything about complaints regarding harm and discrimination. If you decide to work here for some reason (working retail is literally a healthier work environment) pray that you can just fly under the radar because should you have even a minutia of an issue while you are here and you speak out about it, HR and the higher ups will make you suffer as a consequence for you looking out for yourself and calling them out on their tyrannical management. HR is sickening. Saying that it's a joke is an understatement. It's pure evil. I am not exaggerating. In my time at Laika I went to HR multiple times alone, and with co-workers, just to reap the consequences of being pushed out of the company for speaking out because they would rather keep the abuser employed. The hate crimes caused by this company is not worth whatever art prestige you think you will get from this place which you also won't because it's an unorganized, chaotic, and the CEO/director doesn't even care or like anything that the employees work hard on. Do not work here.
