Pros

It's easy to be scared away by a startup. Everyone assumes long hours, wearing too many hats, chaos, dysfunction, mediocre pay and below-average benefits. Lumin is the opposite of all that. Yes, Lumin is a start up and things move at a fast pace, but chaos is by far the exception and not the norm. People genuinely care about each other and work hard to help each other out. Collaboration is a huge component of the culture. Managers actually care about work-life-balance and make an effort to ensure their team members take time off. The pay is competitive and benefits are pretty good considering the size.

Cons

There isn't always great opportunity for mentorship and coaching. In a smaller, leaner, flat structure, you won't find a lot of people able to coach and mentor you in your role. As noted, everyone is helpful and willing to take time to share their knowledge, but as a small startup, you are on your own (to a degree) for learning and growing. That said, the professional development benefit is great and useful for learning new things.

Pros

-Swiftly expanding organization -Abundance of opportunities -Considerate and competitive pay structure -Incredible work culture with a supportive team -Highly intelligent colleagues eager to assist and share knowledge -You feel appreciated

Cons

-with so many things occurring simultaneously, it can be challenging to stay abreast of everything. -The organization has a distinctly transparent culture, which has its advantages and disadvantages. Occasionally, this openness is misused by some employees who focus on distractions rather than the primary objectives.

Pros

Lumin provided a challenging yet dynamic environment where I could learn and expand my skill set, taking on diverse responsibilities from maintaining production lines to developing new products in the residential energy management space. The team at Lumin was composed of dedicated and talented individuals which made collaboration enjoyable. The product is awesome. If I were a home owner, I would definitely install one. The company highly valued and took diversity and inclusion seriously. The company occasionally sponsored lunches, happy hours, trade shows, and other events that fostered team spirit, camaraderie, and nostalgia. Management placed value in it’s employees by providing competitive compensation, 401k with matching, equity in the company, healthcare, bonuses, unlimited paid time off, and other small but fun perks like the provision of electric scooters for commuting to the downtown mall for lunch or dinner, or a group discount on the really nice local ACAC fitness centers.

Cons

Company emphasis on speed or urgency, and frequent changes in management or priorities created challenges in maintaining a consistent direction and compromised the thoroughness and quality of work. This approach resulted in issues or delays that could have been avoided with more careful planning and testing. Striking a better balance between speed and quality, and investing in better tools or process (in progress when I left) to improve efficiency would greatly benefit the company by reducing errors and improving overall workflow. Specifically, for project management and requirements management. Health care coverage left a bit to be desired as coverage was 90% of the premiums and plans offered had high deductibles. All of this said, though, I believe the company has a good product, a good outlook, and great potential. I hope that this feedback can contribute to its future success!
