Pros

Excellent pay/benefits, great staff culture, high expectations and high support for students, beautiful campus, frequent teacher work days, useful PD/PLC, competent and kind admin

Cons

Not enough PTO, high turnover has led to mistrust of upper management, lack of credentialed teachers, while there are many BIPOC staff members, there is an overwhelming amount of white educators and this is not representative of the population served

Making Waves Academy Response

Thank you so much for taking the time to share a review. We are thrilled to hear you feel supported and that you’re enjoying our campus and teacher work days. Knowing that our 'high expectations, high support' model is resonating with you and your students is incredibly rewarding. We also want to sincerely thank you for your candor regarding the challenges we face. • We recognize that transitions in leadership and staff can be unsettling. Building a culture of transparency and stability is a top priority for us. • We are working hard to support our current team in their credentialing journeys and are aggressively recruiting to ensure every classroom has the long-term expertise our students deserve. • While we are proud of our diverse staff, we consistently review our hiring pipelines to ensure we are reaching (and retaining) BIPOC educators. • Balancing student needs with staff wellness is a constant conversation. Your feedback on PTO gives us valuable data to consider as we review our benefits for the coming year. We are so glad you are part of the 'Dream Job' team. Thank you.

Pros

We have new leadership this year which has brought new changes, but it is exciting because it's the right thing for kids. If you are a low performing teacher, there is lots of support and guidance available from admin and grade/ content team. We are all working to do what's best for kids and some folks are not on board with the mission, which is unfortunate. I like our new leadership and think we are headed in the right direction as a school =)

Cons

longer hours than a public school job, but lots' more resources and smaller class sizes which I prefer.

Pros

Parents are supportive, students are for the most part pretty good. Middle School dean team is awesome, and the teachers and supporting staff are great. Middle and upper school teachers are strong, and do their best to collaborate.

Cons

This school should’ve had their charter revoked. There are barely any credentialed teachers, long term subs are common, and the upper management is useless. Most teachers are working towards their credentials, which is fine, but they are not getting the support they need. Coaching is non-existent, and support for brand new teachers is a joke. Most classroom management practices that are pushed on teachers are all compliance based. Observations are barely happening. Coaches and upper management are never held accountable, blame is always put on the teachers or whoever happens to be the principal or assistant principal. The school is constantly restructuring, with there either being a new admin every year or no admin at all. Head of operations was sexually harassing several women, but how can we go to HR when the head of HR is loathed by their coworkers and teachers don’t feel safe around her. Teachers that have stuck it out get fired with no explanation, student support referrals take all year, and IEP services are barely being provided, not because of the team but because how limited they are by upper management and the schedule. They finally hired a strong SpEd director and case managers, and they are doing the best they can but once again upper management gets in the way. Teachers are scared to take on leadership opportunities because once you take on a leadership role, there is a good chance you are getting fired.
