Pros

You get to work with talented and personable colleagues. The UX studies themselves are also interesting and you are able to work directly with high-end clients.

Cons

The management is absolutely terrible. It is a small, super niche company with <10 employees that is led by the founder. While intelligent and knowledgeable about UX subject matter, the leadership is wildly inept at basic communication and proper guidance for the employees. Frustratingly, he creates positions that he himself does not know what they should entail, and then berates the individual(s) when they "don't get it right" or can't "just figure it out." As a highly educated and capable professional, it was disparaging for this supervisor to treat me in a passive aggressive manner when I failed to read his mind or annoyed him when I asked questions to clarify vague tasks. Furthermore, I was told to do "important" things like beer runs for the office fridge, putting in endless complaints to maintenance for the office temperature, and putting together IKEA office furniture. In one-on-one meetings, he expressed the desire to receive feedback. However, when given feedback regarding on his communication deficiencies and general lack of ability to treat his underlings with respect, it was clear he was unable to handle constructive criticism and would then treat you in an even more passive aggressive manner. Additionally, the owner appeared to demonstrate insecurity and vanity, hiding behind his designer brand clothing and his mid-day gym sessions with a personal trainer rather than be available for his staff, invite questions, and foster a positive work environment for all employees, rather than just his favorites. In my experience, this was by far the worst manager I have ever had. In working here, one feels not valued and is riddled with a sense of walking on eggshells around a man-child who rides extensive power trips around people who could, in general, not be less impressed by him and his facade of status.

MeasuringU Response

Thank you for your comment. We also agree that the employees here at MeasuringU are talented and professional. We work hard to select the right candidates and provide the right balance of direction and autonomy. But we’re not perfect. We appreciate the work you did for us as Operations and Administrative Assistant and understand that the person who last held your role and performed the duties you described left you with big shoes to fill. At a small company we often have to wear many hats and pitch in to help whenever possible. We do what's necessary and sometimes that means stretching our job descriptions. As it’s been over a year since you’ve worked with us, we trust you've found a place that better suits you and your particular work style.

Pros

MeasuringU took a leap of faith by giving me the opportunity to work in the competitive field of UX research despite my lack of prior experience. If you are trying to break into UX Research in the tech space look no further this is your place. As someone who was new to the field I believe the experience and exposure you gain here is definitely worth any struggles you may face getting adjusted to the fast paced environment of tech. I got the chance to work on so many cool projects with companies I never thought I would get the opportunity to work with. Throughout my time there, I received unwavering support from the research team whenever I encountered uncertainties or challenges. Additionally, MeasuringU fosters a culture of continuous learning through weekly educational gatherings, led by Jeff, where team members come together to exchange insights and explore innovative research methodologies and data analysis techniques. Overall the connections I forged at MeasuringU were great, and the knowledge I gained was invaluable.

Cons

Some times the fast-paced environment can be overwhelming especially if you’ve never worked within the tech space before. Also, some client schedules can be unpredictable. Projects have the potential to face unexpected hurdles, so you will need to be flexible and quick at problem-solving.

Pros

Good experience learning practical UX applications if you’re new to the field.

Cons

Low pay and little to no work culture. In-person 5 days a week, and most researchers struggle to get jobs afterward because they don’t scope research or collaborate cross-functionally like most other organizations.
