1) Extract as much effort as possible by leading you to believe you will be rewarded. 2) Peers pay is confidential, implies unequal pay. 3) Performance review grades you on many irrelevant topics which can be used to dilute your contribution and effort as per the managements whims while making the process seem transparent.
