Pros

Miami University is an excellent place to work, offering the opportunity to be part of an institution with a strong reputation for academic excellence and innovative programs. With its regional system providing open access pathways, a robust online campus through Regionals, and a global presence with a campus in Germany, the university supports diverse, high-impact educational experiences. Employees can take pride in contributing to a wide range of affordable to residential learning models, including lifelong learning opportunities. The university boasts standout programs like the Farmer School of Business, renowned for developing top business leaders and CEOs, and has all the resources and potential to achieve great things for students and staff alike.

Cons

Working at Miami University has its challenges, many of which stem from its long history and deeply rooted traditions. The same 1809 legacy and iconic red bricks that the university is known for often come with outdated bureaucracy and red tape that can make day-to-day work frustrating. There’s a noticeable divide between the Oxford campus, seen as the “premiere” institution, and the regional campuses, which are often undervalued—impacting students, staff, and faculty alike. Pay disparities between campuses and programs are significant, and resources tend to be prioritized at the main campus. Leadership has rarely embraced the entire university ecosystem, with many Presidents and Provosts perpetuating a culture of division and focusing more on pleasing alumni and the board than addressing the needs of today’s students and employees. While Miami has made progress with international students, there are still serious gaps in diversity across race, culture, gender, and ability. The university has passionate faculty and staff who truly love Miami, but too often they face burnout and leave after years of trying to push for change in a system that feels resistant to progress.
