Pros

Modern Dog Magazine is a great place to get started in editorial; my time there allowed me to further develop my writing skills in a space where I wasn't afraid to ask questions or make a few mistakes. The best part about working at Modern Dog was getting to be part of a supportive team that celebrated creative thinking and a collaborative work style. The editors were always willing to help me out, whether I was facing a challenging task or looking to develop new ideas.

Cons

Crunch times can occur as issues go to press. There are pretty tight deadlines at certain times of the year that are important to plan ahead for.

Pros

Working with a fun, inspiring, creative team A small team and open concept office means you can be involved in all aspects of publishing, not just your silo Round table editorial discussions and free idea sharing Everyone is involved in moving the business forward, which is rewarding and never boring Bring your dog to work Profit sharing Flexible days off Relaxed office environment (wear what you want every day) There are frequently lunches and snacks provided The office is in a cool neighbourhood (food trucks!)

Cons

Publishing is a deadline driven business and there are definitely some high-stress, all-pull-together times when all hands are required on deck to meet goals and get everything wrapped up on deadline. That said, no overtime is ever required; you just have to work hard when you’re in the office. Open concept means everyone works together but also that there is little privacy. Everyone knows what everyone else is working on.

Pros

Bringing your dog to work, but even then - if the publisher decides she doesn't like your dog, for WHATEVER REASON, then it quickly loses its shine.

Cons

Literally everything. Micromanaging on a whole new level. Incredibly stressful. Belittling. No trust in employees. Publisher is constantly looking for reassurance from her employees that she isn't The Worst, even though she is. The HR department consists of one incredibly unpleasant person. Everyone is expendable.
