Pros
My coworkers were smart, qualified people who were extremely dedicated to the mission of the organization. There is a strong sense of camaraderie between employees, and everyone is willing to help each other out even if it's not strictly their job to do so. It is an excellent and fast-paced environment in which to learn about immigration in Philadelphia and to use and refine your skillset.
Cons
Management is disorganized. There was no system in place for reviews, raises, or promotions. I did not have the opportunity to participate in any relevant conferences or trainings during my two years of employment, nor did I ever receive a performance review or raise. This is not standardized between departments: some departmental reviews and raises are consistent and scheduled, but several of my coworkers who had been working there for four or five years had never been evaluated in any way. NSC does not have anyone working in an HR capacity. It is also against NSC policy to provide professional references. Outgoing staff, as well as short-term interns, can only receive references listing their dates of employment (or internship).
