Pros

Free parking, quiet working environment, small group if you prefer fewer people working together. The projects are not hard, most of your time is to use monolithic techniques to solve simple scientific problems. It looks quite “fair” in the company because there is no much differences in job duties among different employees, from technicians to even the boss himself, most of the work is on the bench.

Cons

This is a very small and young startup company with less than five people on site most of the time, located in a rudimentary facility, sometimes it’s necessary to travel on your own car to different labs to do experiment around the city. Working overtime is normal due to the heavy workload for a startup company, and please don’t feel bad if you receive messages or phone calls on weekends or nights to answer questions about your work, except the weekly meeting. It looks like the company is trying to save every penny in the materials and reagents. No health insurance but you may receive some compensation. Stock option is provided for special employees, but won’t be valid if you leave before IPO.

Pros

Friendly and talented co-workers. Can't think of anything else.

Cons

The CEO is very unprofessional. He has limited scientific knowledge but pretends otherwise. Never appreciates good work (I have never heard him say good things to anyone) but is always finding faults. The lab lacks good equipments and resources and you have to borrow from other labs in the building. Reaching work at 9:01am is considered being late and you will be lectured. He once made an employee cry and then blamed her for being unprofessional and shedding crocodile tears. He will not believe well documented (and even repeated by multiple people) results if they are unfavorable. It's next to impossible to have any intellectual conversation with him. He treats the senior Scientist as his personal assistant and expects him to do menial tasks that are not related to lab work. Pay is much lower than industry standards. The building has bugs and mold everywhere.
